What is Fluoride?

During childhood, teeth that erupt from the gum line typically have their enamel strengthened by the fluoride contained in particular foods. This outer tooth layer is meant to be durable enough to withstand pressures from chewing as well as keep the inner layer safe from bacteria and decay. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can be used to cover your child’s teeth so that their enamel remains strong and healthy enough to keep harmful germs at bay. It can either be applied via swallowing fluoridated tap water, brushing their teeth with toothpaste, or by an in-office topical treatment with our team.

How Does Fluoride Treatment Work?

It’s important to know that enamel for baby teeth is typically weaker than adult pearly whites, so they may need extra protection against cavities early on. This is especially the case if your little one eats lots of sugary treats or acidic foods, which can increase the risk of decay and weakened tooth enamel. To apply fluoride to their teeth, our team will simply fill a custom tray with the special gel containing the mineral. The gel will be flavored so that it’s more pleasant for your child, and we’ll have them wear the tray for a few minutes. Once their teeth have had ample time covered in fluoride, we’ll remove the tray and have your little one rinse and spit to finish the treatment.

Which Kids Benefit the Most from Fluoride Treatment?

In most cases, our team will recommend fluoride treatment for most children who can practice oral hygiene, but especially for those who are more prone to getting cavities. Other situations that could indicate a need for this treatment include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Gum disease
  • High sugar diet
  • High acidic diet
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Has a dental restoration or braces
